English-speaking audiences mostly watch foreign films with subtitles: for a long time dubbing into English was rare, kept for cartoons and the odd hit. Today many streaming platforms offer foreign series dubbed into English too, because plenty of people would rather listen than read. MovieCineLab does the same for a whole film: upload it in its own language and hear it in English, with one voice for each character.
No example yet
We'll say it straight away: MovieCineLab's three example films are already in English, so they are dubbed into the other eight languages, not into English. To get an idea of how the voices sound and how the lines are fitted, listen to Charade dubbed into eight languages: the process is the same. The English voices come from the same engine we use for Italian, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Russian.
How it works, from another language into English
- The film is transcribed in its own language, which we detect automatically, and listened to again to fix names and misheard words.
- The characters are recognised along with who says each line; each gets an English voice, male or female, that stays the same for the whole film and, when the audio allows, picks up the actor's timbre.
- The lines are translated into English and measured in syllables, so they last as long as the original.
- The original voices are removed and the new ones take their place, on top of the film's music, noise and effects.
Which films
A film with dialogue, in one of the many languages we recognise: French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Polish, Japanese and lots more. Silent films have no lines to dub. The film can be up to an hour and a half long; we recommend using public-domain films or videos you hold the rights to.
What you get
- The film dubbed into English, in full, as MP4.
- Subtitles as SRT in the film's language and in English, included.
- The screenplay as PDF and Fountain, in English too, included with the dubbing.
Who it's for
For anyone distributing or screening a non-English classic abroad who wants a version people can listen to. For teachers who want to show a European film to an international class. For people with poor eyesight who struggle with subtitles. And for filmmakers who want an idea of how an English edition would sound.
