Night of the Living Dead (1968), from 3:35. You can switch language while the clip plays: it picks up from the same point. «Original» is the film's English soundtrack.
The film
Night of the Living Dead is George A. Romero's first film, shot in black and white in Pennsylvania on a tiny budget with almost unknown actors. It invented the modern zombie: the dead coming back to life, slow, hungry, in groups. In the United States it has been in the public domain since its release, because the prints distributed in 1968 carried no copyright notice. That's why it turns up in archives of free films and is one of the most watched and reissued films ever.
The clip
It's the opening of the film. Barbara and her brother Johnny drive to a country cemetery to leave a wreath on their father's grave. Johnny complains about everything: the drive, the hour of sleep lost to the clock change, the money spent every year on a wreath that then disappears. Barbara prays; he teases her the way he did when they were children: «They're coming to get you, Barbara». Then a man approaches between the headstones.
The voices
Two characters speak in the clip, and each has their own voice in every language:
- Johnny: 28 lines
- Barbara: 16 lines
Two voices sounds like an easy case, but it isn't: Johnny and Barbara often speak quietly, with the wind and the music underneath, and their lines chase each other. The dubbing has to work out who says what without seeing lips, from the voice alone. Try switching from the original to Italian and Polish on the same line: Johnny's voice stays male and mocking, Barbara's tense.
What to listen for
The film's most famous line, «They're coming to get you, Barbara», about two and a half minutes in, in all eight languages: «Vengono a prenderti, Barbara», «Ils viennent te chercher, Barbara», «Sie kommen, um dich zu holen, Barbara», «Idą po ciebie, Barbara». Johnny says it three times, and in the original it's a little different each time: «coming to get you», «coming for you». Notice too how the wind and the original music stay under the voices, without the English voices.
Subtitles and screenplay
The same clip produced subtitles in nine languages and the screenplay in Italian and English. Here's how the English one begins:
EXT. HOUSE - DAY
A brick house. A parked car out front.
BARBARA, a slender blonde woman in a trench coat, stands by the car. JOHNNY, a man in glasses and a dark suit with a polka-dot tie, walks past her carrying a bouquet of flowers and some papers.
JOHNNY
There's nothing wrong with the radio. Must've been the station.
BARBARA
Which row is it in?
EXT. CEMETERY - DAY
Inside MovieCineLab the example film is open to everyone who signs up: you can download the subtitles and screenplay and try Change the words on one of its scenes, for instance by making Johnny say something else instead of «they're coming to get you».
