Charade (1963), from 3:55. You can switch language while the clip plays: it picks up from the same point. «Original» is the film's English soundtrack.
The film
Charade is a comedy thriller directed by Stanley Donen, starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, with music by Henry Mancini. Regina Lampert finds herself a widow and pursued by three men looking for a fortune her husband hid. At her side is a charming man who changes his name in almost every scene. In the United States the film is in the public domain: the copyright notice on the prints wasn't worded the way the law of the time required.
The clip
We're on the terrace of a hotel at a ski resort in the French Alps. Regina, wrapped in fur, tells her friend Sylvie she wants a divorce: her husband Charles is hiding something from her, and she's frightened. Then Peter Joshua arrives, bringing back Sylvie's son. A sparring match of short, sharp lines begins: «Do we know each other?» «Why, do you think we're going to?». It's the same clip you hear, shorter, on the MovieCineLab home page.
The voices
- Regina Lampert: 51 lines
- Peter Joshua: 35 lines
- Sylvie: 14 lines
- Extra (woman): 1 line
Here the dubbing has more work to do: four voices, two women talking to each other, and a quick exchange in which Regina and Peter cut each other off. In the original Sylvie also says a few words in French to her son, «Va jouer, mon chéri»: in the dubbing it becomes a line like any other, in the chosen language.
What to listen for
The exchange near the end, when Regina quotes a line of Shakespeare and Peter replies that Shakespeare never said it: «you just made it up». In each language the line is fitted to the actor's timing: in Italian «Te lo sei inventato», in German a single word, «Erfunden.». Listen too for how the relationship between the two changes: in many languages the translation has to choose between a polite and a familiar «you», which English doesn't distinguish.
Subtitles and screenplay
The same clip produced subtitles in nine languages and the screenplay in Italian and English. Here's how the English one begins:
EXT. SKI RESORT TERRACE - DAY
A dark-haired woman in a black hood with fur collar, REGINA LAMPERT, looks off anxiously.
REGINA
Sylvie!
She sits at a table set with bread and wine. A blonde woman in a grey patterned jacket and red beret, SYLVIE, stands beside her.
SYLVIE
Oh.
REGINA LAMPERT
Can't he do something constructive like start an avalanche or something?
